Colophon

How this site is built, and whose work it uses.

Type

Text is set in VG5000 by Justin Bihan, published by Velvetyne under the SIL Open Font License. It takes its letters from the Philips VG 5000, a 1984 home computer, and adds a smooth lowercase.

Headings use Copy Bitmap, a procedural photocopied cut of VG5000 made for this site: each glyph is rendered large, blurred, displaced by a fixed coarse noise field, thresholded and vectorised back to curves, so the pixel steps go soft. It is a modified version of VG5000 under the same licence.

Paper and grain

The paper is one long roll, assembled in Photoshop from pictures of thin copy paper made with Ideogram, cut into bands by Photoshop’s own exporter and tinted with a pale mint stock.

Grain: a fractal-noise layer at 42%.

The name

The name is drawn, not typed. It was drawn in code as bubble letters after a sticker: each line resampled and smoothed, then blurred and thresholded so the ink pools into the joins, and vectorised back to curves. It is always shown exactly as drawn: never recoloured, filtered or blended.

Pixel Melt

The heavy squiggly shapes come from a method called Pixel Melt. A motif is drawn as pixel art on a grid of tall pixels, rendered large and blurred twice as tall as wide, so each pixel melts into its neighbours. A slow noise field pushes the blur around, the result is thresholded and traced, and the shape is filled flat with a charcoal outline weighted like the name’s.

Dotted art

The fine drawings are lines on a grid of cells, set as one small square dot per cell, with every seventh left out. Every drawing, window and rule uses the same dot, so a bigger drawing has more cells, never bigger dots.

Pictures

The pictures on the home page and in Models on Apple Silicon were generated with Ideogram 4, running on-device on my Mac mini through ideogram4-mlx-distill. The paper roll was made with Ideogram too.

Imagery made with Ideogram is used here under a non-commercial licence.
